C.A. Seward , 1884-1939
Seward was probably most regarded by colleagues as the man who inspired and assisted young artists. He established a printing service for artists at Western Lithograph Company. He has been given large credit for establishing art awareness within Kansas. In the beginning, Seward was Secretary-Treasurer for the Prairie Print Makers Association. Seward had debilitating injuries from childhood rheumatic fever and later injuries he received in an automobile accident. Despite these physical difficulties, Seward created over thirty paintings and around 120 prints that included primarily lithographs with a few block prints, etchings, and drypoints. Seward's prints are in various collections including the Smithsonian Institution, Library of Congress, the Chicago Art Institute, the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, the Los Angeles Museum, the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He had been an invited participant for print exhibitions in Chicago, London, Paris, Florence, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. Other memberships include the Chicago Society of Etchers, California Print Makers, Prairie Print Makers, and the Northwestern Printmakers Association.
